Ransom.... or Rock of Offense?

1 Peter 1:18-19

You know that from your empty way of life
inherited from your ancestors you were RANSOMED
—not by perishable things like silver or gold,  but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ.

The Message Translation says it this way:
Your life is a journey you must travel with a deep consciousness of God.
It cost God plenty to get you out of that dead-end,
empty-headed life you grew up in.
He paid with Christ’s sacred blood, you know.
He died like an unblemished, sacrificial lamb.
And this was no afterthought.
Even though it has only lately
—at the end of the ages—
become public knowledge, God always knew he was going to do this for you. It’s because of this sacrificed Messiah,
whom God then raised from the dead and glorified,
that you trust God, that you know you have a future in God.

Therefore, to you who believe, He is Precious
but to those who are disobedient,
“The Stone which the builders rejected

Has become the Chief Cornerstone,”
 and
A Stone of Stumbling

And a Rock of Offense.”

It's hard to believe that Jesus could be the Precious, Priceless Redeemer
for some, and be a "Stone of Stumbling" and "Rock of Offense" to others.
It all has to do with our choice - whether we receive or reject.
I've made my choice.
Have you?

It's also hard to believe that it was nearly 80*F when I took these photos,
and now we have snow and 16*F this morning!
This has had my bird feeders fluttering with activity.
I'm grabbing a few shots of this, and will post them on Joy4Today!

Majesty

In 2 Peter 1:16,  Peter, speaking of Jesus Christ,
 talks of being an eyewitness
to His Majesty.

This kind of goes along with an earlier post
done several weeks ago entitled "Exalted".

"The Son radiates God's own glory
and expresses the very character of God,
and He sustains everything by the mighty power of His command.
When He had cleansed us from our sins,
He sat down in the place of honor
at the right hand of THE MAJESTIC GOD IN HEAVEN."

Thanks for your visit!
I may have a birding post soon on Joy4Today!

"I" Names from Peter and Paul

Speaking of Jesus being INVISIBLE,
Peter said in 1 Peter 1:8,
"Whom having not seen, you love..."
He also speaks of Him as being IMPARTIAL

"Who without partiality judges"...
...and INCORRUPTIBLE
"knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things,
like silver or gold,
but with the precious blood of Christ,
as of a Lamb without blemish..."

 in 1 Peter 1:17-23.

Paul, writing to Timothy about the Lord Jesus, states:
"Now to the King, eternal, IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE,
to God who alone is wise,
be honor and glory forever and ever.
Amen!"

And of course,
if you'd like to hop on over to Joy4Today,
I'd love to have you visit there as well!

Exalted!

Another of Saint Peter's names:

Speaking of Jesus, Peter said,
"Him God has EXALTED to His right hand
to be Prince and Savior..."
Acts 5:31

Dearly Loved

DEARLY LOVED SON

Peter was remembering his experience on the mountain
when he gave this name to the Lord Jesus.
It was when Jesus gave a glimpse of Who He really was to a selected few,
and when God the Father's voice was heard from the cloud saying,
"This is MY DEARLY LOVED SON,
who brings me great joy.
Listen to Him."
(Matthew 17)

Peter quotes these very words of the Father:
"This is MY DEARLY LOVED SON,
who brings me great joy."
2 Peter 1:17

The Apostle John said,
"God showed how much He loved us
by sending His one and only Son into the world
so that we might have eternal life through Him."

Wishing you much JOY this Christmas season
as you celebrate God's gift of
HIS DEARLY LOVED SON
so that we could have eternal life!

I'm still thinking about a post for Joy4Today.
Maybe I'll come up with one before the week is through!

Chosen!

Peter says Jesus was CHOSEN BY GOD
for great honor
and anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced!

(1 Peter 2:4)

My husband "Chose" me to be his bride.
God has also CHOSEN us and wants us to be His very own to show others His goodness and light.   (1 Peter 2:9)

Thanks for looking at Peter's names for our Lord Jesus with me!

Bishop of Our Souls

Continuing with "Simon Peter's Rocks"!

Speaking of Christ Jesus, Peter said:
"Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree,
that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness:
by whose stripes you were healed.
For you were as sheep going astray;
but are now returned unto the Shepherd and
THE BISHOP OF YOUR SOULS."
1 Peter 2:24-25

The New Living Translation states the same verses this way:
"He personally carried our sins in His own body on the cross
so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right.
By His wounds you are healed.
Once you were like sheep who wandered away,
But now you have returned to your Shepherd,
The Guardian of your souls.

The Author of Life

Continuing with Simon Peter's Names for God...

This one comes from Peter's speech after healing the crippled beggar
at the temple gate called Beautiful...

and addressed to the onlookers who were amazed at what had happened.
Peter said, "Men of Israel, why does this surprise you?
Why do you stare at us
as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?"
Then speaking of Jesus,
he accuses them of disowning "the Holy and Righteous One",
and states that they were guilty of killing

This title reminds me of the Apostle John's words
when he quoted Jesus in John 10:10,
"...I have come that they may have life,
and have it to the full."

Peter's Rock!

OR

"Simon Peter's Rocks"!

As I drank my morning cup of coffee earlier today,
I was meditating on "Simon Peter's confession".
Jesus had just asked his disciples,
"Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"
Matthew 16:13

Peter quickly answered,
"You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God."
Matthew 16:16 NKJV

The same verse in a different translation says:
"You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God."
Matthew 16:16 NIV

Jesus went on to tell Peter,
"You are Peter, a rock.
This is THE ROCK on which I will put together my church,
a church so expansive with energy
that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out."

Those words must have had a profound effect on Peter,
that affected him...
because in his epistles,
he makes several references to Jesus
as either a STONE or a ROCK.

In 1 Peter 2:6-8 he quotes part of this verse from Psalm 118:22,
so if Peter were painting God's Names on Rocks,
I think this would be one of them.

also lists these "Rock" names given by Peter:
"A Living Stone" - 1 Peter 2:4
"An Elect Stone" - 1 Peter 2:6
"A Stone of Stumbling" - 1 Peter 2:7-8
"A Rock of Offense" - 1 Peter 2:7-8

And although I used this rock in a previous post,
I believe Peter could have painted it,
because he referred to Jesus as a "Precious Stone" in 1 Peter 2:6.

Attesting to the fact that Jesus had truly become his ROCK,
Simon Peter, son of Bar-Jonah
also had other names he attributed to the Son of God.
Maybe I'll feature them next week!

Peter also had a name for us - Lively Stones.

The Captain of My Salvation

In the Old Testament Joshua encountered God as
"The Commander of the Army of the LORD"
Joshua 5:14

When David faced the giant, he called upon
"The LORD of Heaven's Armies".
1 Samuel 17:45

King Hezekiah encouraged his people in the battle against Sennacherib:
"Be strong and courageous.
Do not be afraid or discouraged..
for there is a greater power with us...
With us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles."
2 Chronicles 32:7-8

The writer of Hebrews calls JESUS
"The Captain of our Salvation".
Hebrews 2:10

The above WORDfocus comes from the NKJV study Bible.
Strong's concordance amplifies the word "Captain" further
saying it also means
Hero, Champion, Founder, and Scout.
What great titles for our Savior!

When our way becomes a bit foggy,
and it's hard to see the path in front of us,
it's good to know that
THE LORD OF HEAVEN'S ARMIES
is
THE CAPTAIN OF OUR SALVATION!
and will lead the way!
