Isaiah 40

Isaiah 40 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible.
Featured below are only a few of the verses.
(To read the whole chapter click on the colored link
at the top of this post.)

"Comfort, comfort my people, says your God...
He tends His flock like a Shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in His arms
and carries them close to His heart...
Who has understood the mind of the LORD
 or instructed Him as His counselor?
To whom, then will you compare God?
What image will you compare Him to?
Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood since the earth was founded?
He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,
and its people are like grasshoppers.
He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,
and spreads them out like a tent to live in....
To whom will you compare Me?
Or Who is My equal? says the Holy One."
"Lift your eyes and look to the heavens;
Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one,
and calls them each by name.
Because of His great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing...
Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and His understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint."

I hope these verses have encouraged you

"Our Generous God"

 "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all liberally and without reproach,
and it will be given to him."
James 1:5

 As bad as you are,
you still know how to give good gifts to your children.
 But your heavenly Father is even more ready
 to give good things to people who ask.
Matthew 7:11
 Another translation of James 1:5 says,
"If you need wisdom,
and He will give it to you.
He will not rebuke you for asking."

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift
coming down to us from God our Father,
who created all the lights in the heavens.
 He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
 He chose to give birth to us by giving us His true Word.
And we, out of all creation,
 became His Prized Possession
James 1:17-18

Amazing to me that God can be so many different things
to so many different people...

When I study God's names, I see different sides of His character
and learn to know Him better.
I am also learning to see myself differently
as I get to know Him better...
I'll be featuring these,
 painted in sea shells, from time to time.
I hope they encourage you as well!

The Unforgettable One

Featuring the work of my granddaughter
on this Name for God...

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
    and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
    I will not forget you!"
Isaiah 49:15

It was King David who gave this name to the LORD!

"...My God is my Rock, in whom I take refuge,
 my Shield and the horn of my salvation.
 my refuge and my Savior
— from violent people you save me."

Also in Psalm 18:2
"The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress and my Deliverer;
my God is my Rock, in whom I take refuge,
 my Shield and the Horn of my salvation,

"The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear?
 — of whom shall I be afraid?"

"He is my loving God and my Fortress
MY STRONGHOLD and my Deliverer,
my Shield, in whom I take refuge"

Martin Luther used similar names for God in this powerful hymn.

Maybe you've noticed...
I haven't done too many posts on Joy4Today lately.
Bear with me!
Maybe I'll get inspired soon!

The Pathfinder

"Show me the path where I should walk, O LORD;
point out the right road for me to follow.
Lead me by Your truth and teach me,
for You are the God who saves me...
The LORD is good and does what is right;
He shows the proper path to those who go astray."
Psalm 25

"...We have these three witnesses:
 the VOICE of the Holy Spirit in our hearts,
 the VOICE from heaven at Christ’s baptism,
and the VOICE before he died.
 And they all say the same thing:
that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."
1 John 5:6-8

And if you leave God’s paths and go astray,
you will hear a VOICE behind you say,
 “No, this is the way; walk here.”
Isaiah 30:21

Father to the fatherless

"He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow..."
Deuteronomy 10:18 NIV

"Father of orphans,

    champion of widows,
        is God in his holy house.
God makes homes for the homeless,
    leads prisoners to freedom..."
Psalm 68:5-6 The Message

Absent fathers come in many forms...
Absent because of death...
Absent because of divorce...
Absent because of neglect...
Absent because of being a "workaholic"...

No matter what reason there may be for an absent father,
 there is one FATHER who said:
"I will never leave you or forsake you."

The Message translation says it this way in Hebrews 13:5-6
 "Since God assured us,
'I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,'
we can boldly quote, God is there, ready to help;
 I’m fearless no matter what. Who or what can get to me?"

The GOD of our Fathers

"Then we cried out to the LORD God of our Fathers..."
"O LORD God of our Fathers,
Are You not God in Heaven,
And do You not rule over all the kingdoms,
In Your hand is there not power and might...?"
"Blessed be the LORD God of our Fathers..."
"The God of our Fathers raised up Jesus..."
"The God of our Fathers has chosen you
that you should know His will,
and see The Just One,
and hear the voice of His mouth."
(Multiple selections from the New King James Version of the Holy Bible)

  1. "Faith of our fathers, living still,
    In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
    Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy
    Whene’er we hear that glorious Word!
    • Refrain:
      Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
      We will be true to thee till death.
  2. Faith of our fathers, we will strive
    To win all nations unto thee;
    And through the truth that comes from God,
    We all shall then be truly free.
  3. Faith of our fathers, we will love
    Both friend and foe in all our strife;
    And preach thee, too, as love knows how
    By kindly words and virtuous life."

Jehovah Gmolah - The LORD who Rewards

In a previous post I mentioned a book by Marilyn Hickey entitled
(To see that post, click HERE!)

When I purchased the book, I also bought an afghan featuring
I keep it on the foot of my bed,
and I pull it over me when I'm chilly and need just a bit more cover.

 While folding up the light blanket the last few mornings,
I discovered a Name for God that I have not yet featured on Rock4Today.

Then today I stumbled across a "Daily Bible Study Blog"
featuring and explaining this same name for God.
You can find that post by Ken Herschell by clicking HERE.

"But without faith it is impossible to please Him,
for he who comes to God must believe that He is,
and that He is a REWARDER
of those who diligently seek Him."
Hebrews 11:6

In looking up verses for this post I was surprised
at how much the Bible has to say about REWARDS.
According to Blue Letter Bible, from Genesis through Revelation
REWARDS are mentioned OVER 50 TIMES in the New King James Version.

At the back of THE BOOK, the Apostle John quotes Jesus' words,
"Behold, I am coming quickly,
And My REWARD is with Me,
to give to everyone according to his work."
Revelation 22:12

Great and Glorious!

"Don't be afraid of the enemy!
Remember the LORD,

and fight..."
Nehemiah 4:14

"Your right hand, O LORD, is glorious in power.
Your right hand, O LORD, smashes the enemy.
In the greatness of Your majesty,
You overthrow those who rise against You.
You unleash Your blazing fury;
It consumes them like straw...
Who is like you among the gods, O LORD---
GLORIOUS in holiness,
Awesome in splendor,
Performing great wonders?"
(A few verses from Exodus 15)

When the Jews asked Jesus who He was,
Jesus answered by linking Himself to the Father and said,
"He who sent Me is RELIABLE,
and what I have heard from Him I tell the world."
John 8:25-26

God is RELIABLE because He is FAITHFUL.
"He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change His mind;
for He is not a man, that He should change His mind."
1 Samuel 15:29

It sounds like Samuel might have paraphrased this verse:
"God is not human, that He should lie,
Not a human being, that He should change His mind.
Does He speak and then not act?
Does He promise and not fulfill?"

"May God himself,
 the God who makes everything holy and whole,
 make you holy and whole,
 put you together—spirit, soul, and body—
and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ.
The One who called you is completely dependable.
If He said it, He’ll do it!"
